Historical Context

This letter, dated July 31, 1932, was written by Evan's sister Vivian.

Vivian mentions "six more kids eliminated"--referring to marriage--and although she was torn between him and a "fellow from school", she married Floyd Bagley (mentioned in this letter), 22 months later.

Floyd Bagley was the son of Cyrenus “Rena” Bagley and Elizabeth “Bessie” Neeld. The "Lester" mentioned in the letter was likely his older brother, Lester Bagley, who later became a prominent figure in Wyoming, serving as the State Game and Fish Commissioner.

My Dear Brother,

Did you think that your old sis had completely forgotten you? How are you anyway? Very, very busy I know. Congratulations on the new appointment. I just haven’t gotten around to doing it before now. We are all so proud of you! And mother just lives on her boys’ letters. Guess you’ll never be so perfect in the eyes of your family as now.

Life goes on very much the same here as ever. Sundays are lonely days for me. Not all of them but

most. Last Sunday night we went down to Thayne and started dancing at 12:00. Floyd came to Etna from Greys River where his family have been camping to milk Lester’s cows, and then came on up and got me. He was going back up Greys River by 3:30 a.m. I was kind of worried about him for fear he would go to sleep and run off a dugway.

Evan, do you remember the time that you and Floyd and Brent and Nate went to Lakeville to the rodeo—and took “Ed’s” coffee pot (that he thought more of than he did his wife) and lost it? I heard several of those old times recounted the other night. Floyd is as reckless and as charming as ever.

The Bagleys invited me to go with them up Greys River again this year and I should like to have gone, but—well Evan I’m afraid that too much would have been assumed by my presence there again this year. So I didn’t go and I’m afraid that the whole tribe of them will be “down” on me for the rest of my days.

I guess that I haven’t told you very much about the fellow that I met at school. Have I? I do think a lot of him. But now I have come to a place where I must make a choice between the two—and oh how I wish I were twins!

I had a Patriarchal Blessing the other day—also some advice from Bishop Thurman. Maybe that along with some of your other duties, you could give your sis some advice.

There have been wedding bells in the past month for Carl Stock; Luella Beutler; Fontella Carl; Ben Harrison & the Roberts; Don Neeld—there’s six more kids eliminated.

Seymour’s house burned down last week nothing was saved-but it was insured.
