Historical Context
This letter from Evan's brother Reuel Thomas Call is dated June 3, 1933.
Reuel's interest in aviation is clear. He mentions "Autogiros" (a precursor to the helicopter that used a free-spinning rotor for lift), reflecting the aviation craze of the 1930s. Pennsylvania was a hub for Autogiro manufacturing (Pitcairn Aircraft), which explains why he expects Evan to see them there. He mentions hoping to go to the National Air Races in L.A. The 1933 National Air Races (NAR) in Los Angeles were a high-octane spectacle that perfectly captured the "Golden Age of Flight." Held at Mines Field (which we now know as LAX) from July 1–4, 1933, they were the premier sporting event of the year, drawing massive crowds despite the economic gloom of the Great Depression.
