Visitors on Deck: Evan and Others

This photo shows Evan and a group of missionaries on the deck of a boat.

Both men are wearing sharp fedoras, high-collared overcoats, double-breasted suits, and dark leather gloves. Evan sports a patterned tie and a heavy tweed or plaid textured coat with wide peak lapels typical of early 1930s formal winter wear.

The woman on the left wears a plush, light-colored shearling or fleece coat with broad shawl lapels and dark gloves. The woman on the right wears a striking, full-length patchwork fur coat paired with round wire-rim spectacles and T-strap heels.

Notice the contrast in footwear—the men wear sturdy dress shoes, while the woman in the center wears classic pumps and the woman on the right wears multi-strap Mary Jane/T-strap shoes.

Directly behind the group is a heavy wooden spar running horizontally across the frame, anchored with iron bands or fittings. Running rigging and stays (the thin lines extending to the upper right) frame the background sky, indicating they are standing on the main deck near the base of one of the ship's masts. The wooden planking underfoot shows visible grain and slight weathering, characteristic of a historical wooden ship deck.

Bright, direct sunlight creates crisp shadows—you can see the shadow of a spar or mast cast softly across the background spar and the center woman's shoulder.
